I never saw the revival. I only saw a production in Philadelphia, somewhere around 1993. My parents taped the PBS airing, which I watched for a time. I now of course own the DVD, and I listen to the cast recording regularly. You know those posters that say, "Everything I need to know I learned in kindergarten...?" (there are other variations too) Well, my version of that is everything I need to know in life I learned from Stephen Sondheim. And IMO, at least half of that can come from Into the Woods. And at least half of *that* could come from a single song- Children Will Listen. Into the Woods seems especially adept at illustrating Sondheim's incredible understanding of relationships and human nature and struggles, all wrapped up in a brilliant show that I will never tire of. I wish I had seen the revival. (well, I wish I had seen the original too, not only on TV). Though when Laura Benanti performed at the Kennedy Center last spring, she did sing Steps of the Palace and Children Will Listen (with her mother as a duet, it was beautiful).
Can't wait to read your next post.
~londynNowAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
