The Friday 5: Broadway Boats

Yesterday's 58th anniversary of Noel Coward's musical, Sail Away got me to thinking about all the boats I've seen on Broadway. It is amazing how many I've seen, really. Now, that's stage magic. Since this is a Friday 5, I'm limited, but I could do at least 10! Anyway, here are 5 times a boat was on stage that impressed me. Sometimes, the boat was more impressive than the show itself!

The Friday 5:
5 Boats on Broadway

1. Anything Goes (Revivals: 1987 & 2011)
I loved the 87 revival in all its art deco glory. The S.S. American was as smart and sassy as that cast and production. Didn't much care for the 2011 version - way too literal (not a good thing in this morally dicey and aging show) - but the sheer size of the boat was impressive.

2. King Kong (2018)
I have to admit the picture above doesn't do it justice. But when that ship materialized out of nowhere, and the projections made me queasy, I knew I was seeing something spectacular. The only thing more so was that cute monkey puppet.

3. Peter Pan/Finding Neverland (2015)
Peter Pan is my thing. And both iterations of the tale feature scenes on Captain Hook's pirate ship. Yo ho! I love it every time!

The original production. That boat is impressive!

4. Show Boat (1994)
Looks like this epic classic has a long history of nautical opulence - just look at the pictures above. The Hal Prince 1994 revival was jaw-dropping from the first note of the overture to the last trills of the exit music. The spontaneous applause when the call, "The show boat's a-comin'!" was heard and the bow of the ship slid into view is something I'll never forget.

5. Titanic (1997)
A lot of people didn't like the rendering of the greatest ship that ever sailed. It asked so much of the audience's imagination. But damn if the hair didn't go up on my arms when three full decks appeared at once and sank! Then there was the coup de theatre when the stage became the star-filled sky over the expanse of Atlantic Ocean as a miniature Titanic sailed silently across the stage and to its inevitable doom. I loved every single minute of that voyage.

The Friday 5: 5 Times Broadway Had Puppets

In honor of the closing of Avenue Q and the Tony-winning King Kong, we use this week's Friday 5 to celebrate the art of puppetry. Over the years, we've seen some awesome, jaw-dropping stuff. From monsters and sluts to life-size horse warriors and even a gazelle or two, characters we never dreamed we'd see on a stage have come to vivid, incredible life right before our eyes.

5. Disney's Frozen
Well, there are only really two in this show, but they are very cute, and they represent two very different types of puppetry. It may be cold in Arendelle, but they warm our hearts!

4. King Kong
Kong himself is easily the most impressive single puppet I've ever seen. And not just because he's so freakin' big, but because the big lug made us feel. His death was heartbreaking. Then there's the show-within-the-show - watching the King's Company work their magic was just as impressive. Probably for the best that I don't say too much about that snake...

3. Disney's The Lion King
Probably the gold standard of ingenuity of puppetry in all of its many forms... and let's face it, Julie Taymor is a genius. No matter how many times I see "The Circle of Life," I am overwhelmed. And Zazu will always have a place in my heart.

2. War Horse
These animals - life-size, no less - are impressive from every angle. Despite the brilliant way that you can see how they are made and brought to life, your eyes, mind and heart see real horses. How about that goose!?

1. Avenue Q
Who would have guessed that hand puppets where you can see the humans operating them could be so profoundly affecting? Every visit was like going home and seeing old friends. Puppet sex is fun, but watching a slut turn her life around is even more exhilarating. Plus, Rod proves that not all Republicans are rotten to the core.

Standing @ Zero: King Kong's Ashley Andrews (Partly NSFW)

So, why "Standing at Zero"? You know the numbers across the front of the stage? Zero is center, and we are putting one performer front and center. This month's honoree is one of many unsung heroes in a Broadway musical - the Dance Captain/Swing/Understudy. He does it all! And in this case he does it with a giant, ferocious ape! All of this, and he's making his Broadway debut! What a way to start! Next time you are at King Kong, be sure to notice the work (and beauty) of Ashley Andrews!

Ashley comes to us from across the pond, and he's really made quite a splash on the Great White Way. In addition to his Dance Captain/Swing/Understudy duties, he recently shared some great news on Twitter! Congratulations!
