Broadway Christmas Eves

Christmas Eve is upon us.  Arguably, it is the second most important "eve" of the year, just behind Tony Awards Eve New Year's Eve.  All this talk of eves got me to thinking of Broadway "eves."

A quick search of the term in the Internet Broadway Database yields a lot items with the EVE letter combination - like StEVE Kazee or "You're NEVEr Fully Dressed Without a Smile."  Did you know there have been a full 14 Broadway productions that start with "An Evening With...", the latest being An EVEning with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin.  After a scan of all such titles and people, brings these results (I've left out a few, including an actress from the 1800's who was known simply as Eve).

Broadway Performers:

Eve Arden
Moose Murders
Eve Arden - probably most famous for two non-Broadway things: the classic TV show Our Miss Brooks and as Principal McGee in the film version of Grease.  But she did appear on Broadway several times, her final appearance was in the infamous one-nighter, Moose Murders.

Eve Best
The Homecoming
Eve Best - a two-time Tony Award nominee (both of her Broadway appearances have been so honored.  The London-born actress hasn't been back in a while...how about it, Eve?

Eve Ensler
The Good Body
Eve Ensler - her ground-breaking Vagina Monologues put her on the map, for sure.  She both wrote and starred in her most recent Broadway effort, The Good Body.

Broadway Songs:

"Adam and Eve"
Scandalous

Two shows featured songs called "Eve" - The Apple Tree and Fancy Free.  Another two featured songs called "Adam and Eve" - The Pied Piper and this season's Scandalous.  Teddy and Alice featured a ditty called "Election Eve," and both the Broadway and off-Broadway versions of Carrie featured the classic aria "And Eve Was Weak."  And there's even the very seasonal "I Hate Christmas Eve" from what else? Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

"I Hate Christmas Eve"
Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

Broadway Shows:

"Eve" appears in many a show title.  Among the most "interesting:" On the Eve, All Soul's Eve and The Eve of St. Mark.  There has been Daughters of Eve and Eve's Daughter; and there was Eve's Leaves.  But I  love this series of titles: The Fall of Eve, The Return of Eve and the inevitable The Wooing of Eve.

There was even a play called Christmas Eve by one Gustav Eckstein.  It played the Henry Miller's Theatre from December 27 - 30, 1939.  It starred Mildred Natwick and a young boy named Sidney Lumet, later a famous - very - film director.  It played 6 performances, none of which were on Christmas Eve or that other important eve.

What's my favorite Broadway-related "eve"?  Check back on New Year's Eve!

12 Shows of Broadway Christmas

No, there will not be 5 golden rings - though there may be 5 golden plates when you see The Book of Mormon.  But chances are pretty good that more than once you could see 9 ladies dancing - most likely at Nice Work If You Can Get It.  Newsies will provide more than 10 lords a-leaping, but I'm afraid The Mystery of Edwin Drood has but one of the six geese - but it ain't a-laying, it's cooked (by Bazzard, no less)!  Likewise, Once may provide several, but not a full dozen drummers drumming, and there are at least 8 maids in Bring It On: The Musical, but they're a-cheering, not a-milking!

And, you can have all 12 Days of Broadway Christmas if you plan it just right (and have a decent amount of money).  OK, not 12 Days but 6 matinees and 6 evening shows in just 7 days.  Here's just one possible way to see 12 Broadway shows starting on Monday, Christmas Eve.

Here's one way to see all 11 plays (plus 1 musical to fill it out) on Broadway:

Golden Boy
(Through January 20 at the Belasco Theatre)

Monday, 12.24 - Peter and the Starcatcher
Tuesday, 12.25 - Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
Wednesday, 12.26 Matinee - Golden Boy
Wednesday, 12.26 Evening - Glengarry Glen Ross
Thursday, 12.27 Matinee - Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
Thursday, 12.27 Evening - The Other Place

Picnic
(Through February 24 at the American Airlines Theatre)

Friday, 12.28 Matinee - War Horse
Friday, 12.28 Evening - Grace
Saturday, 12.29 Matinee - Picnic
Saturday, 12.29 Evening - The Heiress
Sunday, 12.30 Matinee - Bring It On: The Musical (Catch the final performance!)
Sunday, 12.30 Evening - Dead Accounts

Here's one for musical fans - including all 6 new musicals from this season (that are still running), plus tickets for the toughest "gets" of all, Once, Wicked, Newsies and The Book of Mormon!

Chaplin: The Musical
(Through January 6 at the Barrymore Theatre)

Monday, 12.24 - A Christmas Story: The Musical
Tuesday, 12.25 - Evita
Wednesday, 12.26 Matinee - Annie
Wednesday, 12.26 Evening - Elf: The Musical
Thursday, 12.27 Matinee - The Book of Mormon
Thursday, 12.27 Evening - Chaplin

The Mystery of Edwin Drood
(Through March 10 at Studio 54)

Friday, 12.28 Matinee - The Phantom of the Opera
Friday, 12.28 Evening - The Mystery of Edwin Drood
Saturday, 12.29 Matinee - Newsies
Saturday, 12.29 Evening - Once
Sunday, 12.30 Matinee - Bring It On: The Musical (Catch the final performance!)
Sunday, 12.30 Evening - Wicked

Bring It On: The Musical
(Through December 30 at the St. James Theatre)

Never fear...you can ring in the New Year with the rest of the musicals you missed this week with the special schedule of shows for New Year's week!

My 12 Favorite Broadway Christmas Songs Part 2

Here are my 6 favorite Broadway Christmas songs.  Numbers 12 - 7 are in yesterday's blog (scroll down!).

My Top 6 Favorite Broadway Christmas Songs

There is no song or scene on stage, film or even in a book that so succinctly and perfectly captures the truth and the humor of Christmas shopping - from both the shopper's and the seller's point of view!

6.  "12 Days to Christmas" from She Loves Me

The second of three Broadway Christmas songs with a political on my list, this one stings a little these days, as it did back in 1996, as Americans stuggle with the economy and as the chasm between the "haves" and the "have nots" continues to grow. Not exactly the stuff of Yuletide joy, but as theatre...wow.

5. "Christmas Bells" from RENT

Just as number 6 captures a specific aspect of the holiday season, number 4 just as wonderfully captures the build up and abject joy of that month leading up to the magic day.  Remember when the build up was only a month? (If you get the chance, check this show out before it leaves Broadway on December 20!)

4.  "It All Comes Down to Christmas" from A Christmas Story: The Musical

The last "political" Christmas song on the list is back in full view these days at the Palace Theatre.  Funny that my other favorite song from that show is "We'd Like to Thank You, Herbert Hoover"...

3.  "New Deal for Christmas" from Annie

Another classic brought to the stage via film.  The truth is, no matter where I hear it, my head floods with Christmas memories, and that's not a bad thing at all.

2.  "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" from Meet Me in St. Louis

Maybe it's because it's from my first Broadway show.  Maybe it's because I worship Angela Lansbury.  But really, it's because when I need quick boost of holiday spirit, this is the song I turn on.

1.  "We Need a Little Christmas" from Mame

My 12 Favorite Broadway Christmas Songs Part 1

I don't know how it is where you live, but two of the local radio stations where I am have been playing holiday music 24/7 since Thanksgiving.  One of them has played them commercial free!  Even as I try to avoid getting sick of it all too soon by trying to stay off those channels, I find myself listening a little more each day.  I think I am now trying desperately to gain some Christmas spirit.  I'm not too worried about making it to the finish line since I am sure I'll be like a little kid come the 25th.  Having a 5 and 3 year old will do that to you, right?

Anyway, being the Broadway geek that I am, you can imagine that I get excited when a show tune Christmas song comes on.  I crank up the radio and sing at the top of my lungs (pretty embarrassing during rush hour)!  Not all of my favorite Christmas/Broadway songs get air play, though.  So here are...

My 12 Favorite Broadway Christmas Songs

Even though this is one of my favorite show tunes ever, and I think the entire scene in which it plays is one of the tightest, most perfectly crafted in modern American musicals, it comes in at number 12 because it isn't really a Christmas song, but it takes place during a Christmas Eve dinner.

12. "No Good Can Come From Bad" from The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Politics and Christmas seem like strange bedfellows, don't they?  But 3 of my 12 faves have political undertones.  The first on stage was done as a British Panto number, complete with cannon costumes, and dozens of Maggie Thatcher puppets.

11.  "Merry Christmas, Maggie Thatcher" from Billy Elliot: The Musical

One of my favorite shows in recent years featured a tear-jerker of an Act One finale.  I know Christmas can be an emotionally overwhelming time, but who thought a felon on the run and an FBI agent could make me cry?

10.  "Christmas Is My Favorite Time of Year" from Catch Me If You Can

Leave it to Broadway to turn a Madame and her hookers into a Christmas musical memory...

9.  "Hard Candy Christmas" from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas

This is a relative newcomer in the Broadway canon, but its exuberance makes me want to believe all over again...

8.  "There Is a Santa Claus!" from Elf: The Musical

I'll end the first half of this list with a true classic.  This wouldn't even be on the list if it weren't for the penchant for bringing movies to the stage, but how can you resist this song and the whole show that surrounds it like a big fat ribbon?

7.  "White Christmas" from White Christmas

What are my 6 favorite Broadway Christmas songs?  Check back tomorrow!  And tell me your favorites by adding a comment below!
