CD REVIEW: Sierra Boggess Live at 54 Below: Awakenings

I've been smitten with Sierra Boggess ever since her heartwarming performance as Ariel in The Little Mermaid, so I've been looking forward to her CD capturing her cabaret act at 54 Below (since I couldn't get there myself.  It was worth the wait.  A great mix of the expected - songs from shows she's done, self-deprecating humor, and some nice surprises, her act is always entertaining.  And I'll say it now: she gets my vote for the role of Eliza Doolittle in the upcoming revival of My Fair Lady.  Her act (and the CD) is called Awakening, and is all about those people and events that have inspired her.  Even she admits that she might be a bit young for such heady themes, but it (mostly) turns out she's learned a lot.  I'm glad she is sharing.

Grade: A

Title: Sierra Boggess Live at 54 Below: Awakening
Artist: Sierra Boggess
Label: Broadway Records
Number: BR-CD54B-010
Format: Single CD
Case: Jewel Case
Booklet: Full color, 8 pages.  CD packaging, design and layout by Van Dean.  Photography by Matthew Murphy.  Liner notes by Hal Prince and Andrew Lloyd Webber.  Executive Produced by Van Dean and Kenny Howard for Broadway Records.

THINGS TO ENJOY ABOUT AWAKENINGS

1.  The Words: Ringing endorsements from no less than Hal Prince and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber speak volumes for the respect this still-blossoming musical star engenders in the industry, and the uniformly adoring response to everything she says and sings tells how much her fans love and respect her.  And then there are the words of her between songs patter.  She's warm, very funny and, when she isn't doing the "keep to the theme of the evening" stuff that sounds rehearsed, she's nicely genuine.

2.  The family: How great is it that she has her sister as part of her band, playing a mean cello?  And that she has her father - after a sweet bit about her dad's "awesomeness" - accompany her in a great rendition of "Wildflower."  I love the pride in her voice when she announces that he made the guitar he played!

3.  The music: As I said, there is a great mix of what you'd expect and some nice surprises.  On the "expected list": Broadway songs like " Before the Parade Passes By" and "A Good Thing" (from Hello, Dolly! and Flora, the Red Menace, respectively) and film songs, "I Have Confidence" and "Colors of the Wind," and others. I should note that she includes "Parade" as a tribute to the influence of Barbra Streisand, who did the movie of Dolly.  Granted, she sings like Babs, not like Carol!  And, though it isn't something I generally enjoy, I'm glad she included two operatic arias from La Boheme, proving she can handle both Mimi AND Musetta!

4. The big surprise: She does a killer "Part of Your World," which is no surprise since it comes from her big Broadway break The Little Mermaid.  The big surprise comes from the entire Lloyd Webber sequence.  She doesn't give us the expected solo number from Phantom.  Instead she tells a very funny story about Prince, Webber and Gillian Lynne, and then launches into "The Ultimate Medley with Apologies to ALW."  I won't spoil it; you need to hear it for yourself.

The entire CD is a fun listen, and a high quality performance.  I hope she makes it back to Broadway, and soon.  Will it be Rebecca?  Either way, I'm sure Miss Boggess will find some inspiration from it to add to her next cabaret!

Faces of the Future: More Updates

No sooner did I post an update about my featured Faces of the Future (HERE), than I got a bunch of emails and Tweets about four of them I missed.  My apologies to all concerned - especially Nick Cartell, Jon Rua, Clay Thomson, and Andrew Brewer.  Here are updates on the four!

Andrew Brewer became a Face of the Future when he became a part of the Cougars: The Musical, playing a beefcake.  He will soon be showing off the goods in the new off-Broadway show, Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man.  He plays Stefan, "The Seductive Model."  He definitely has the body for it. Since Cougars, he's specialized in playing bullies, in the Alice Ripley-starring Carrie, and in the musical webseries, The Hinterlands.

The Hinterlands and Carrie

Nick Cartell managed to make the FotF grade despite being in the ill-fated Scandalous.  He had also been in Jesus Christ Superstar, and now, he's on tour in another Andrew Lloyd Webber classic, the "new" production of The Phantom of the Opera.

Phantom #SIP

One of my favorites in Hands on a Hardbody, which got him on this list, Jon Rua has joined the cast of the new David Henry Hwang play, Kung Fu.  The show hasn't started performances yet off-Broadway, so I can't say for sure, but I suspect some of Rua's dance ability will be put to use in this one!

Thomson and Rice
And Clay Thomson, who actually got his start in Newsies, but made the FotF list as part of the cast of Matilda, which he is still a part of. But for a couple of weeks, he'll be doing double duty as part of the ensemble of Encores! production of Little Me, which he's rehearsing now for an early February run  Plus, he appeared in the now-legendary tap dance video to the song "Cups," starring his boyfriend, and friend of this blog, Christopher Rice.

FACE of the FUTURE: Cinderella's Callan Bergmann

I've actually had my eye on this talented cutie since he was part of the totally hot quartet of backup cowboys in the off-Broadway musical Lucky Guy.  I next noticed him in his funny and beautifully danced ballet dream sequence in Silence!  (He also represented that show in last year's Broadway Beauty Pageant competition!) Most recently, he's been in Encores! production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and in the National Tour of Disney's Mary Poppins.  Oh! And he was a featured dancer on TV's Smash.

He's not just another pretty face. He's an amazing dancer.  He also shares his talents as a teacher with Broadway Connection.  And now,  Callan Bergmann is making his Broadway debut as a swing in Cinderella.  I am CERTAIN that his is a face we will see a lot of in the future.

He's photogenic...

HOT or NOT Round 8: The Bridges of Madison County Edition

First, it was an internationally best-selling novel.  Then it became a big Hollywood film, starring no less than Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood.  And now The Bridges of Madison County is a lush, romantic Broadway musical.  Penned by musical theatre vets Marsha Norman (book - The Secret Garden, 'night Mother) and Jason Robert Brown (music and lyrics - Parade, 13), and helmed by Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, Women on the Verge, The Light in the Piazza), the show is one of the most hotly anticipated musicals of the season.

Speaking of hot, for the eighth time this season, it is up to you to decide who moves on to the finals in our quest for THE HOTTEST MUSICAL CAST OF 2013 - 2014!  Objectifying, I guess, but really also just silly fun.  That said, let me remind you that "HOT" is not just based on beauty or matinee idol looks or a killer bod.  Also up for consideration is their performance, their "buzz-worthy-ness," and the trajectory of their career.  Is their role this time around a milestone or a misery?  Are the chat rooms a-buzz with delight or humming with impending doom?  HOT to look at isn't enough to make it into the finals - even the cutest can be a "NOT"!  To see who has already made the finals, click HERE.

Now, without further ado, here is the cast of The Bridges of Madison County  To see their pics, scroll past the poll.  THIS POLL WILL CLOSE AT NOON ON SUNDAY, JANUARY 26th! (Be sure to click "Done" at the bottom of the poll to make your vote count!) NOTE: Cast member Kevin Kern (standby) is not eligible for this poll because he is already a finalist in the same category this season!

Broadway Things That Make Me Happy: January 2014 (Part II)

As I mentioned last week, this year, I'm going to try to be more positive, and that includes appreciating things about Broadway.  This week, there were plenty of things to be happy about!

2 for 1 tickets:  I finally got around to trying for tickets to Broadway Week this year, and I am glad I did!  Thanks to that promo, I'm getting to go back to Matilda, in practically the same seats I got to see it before!  I'm happy and feeling a little bit naughty, too...
2-for-1 + Matilda = PARTY!
Upcoming show announcements: This week saw a ton of show announcements, and three have me really looking forward to the future.  One of my favorite plays of all time is coming to Broadway at the very end of the season, with one of my favorite performers, The Cripple of Inishmaan is the play; Daniel Radcliffe is the performer. Next season will see what I call an "event play": The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is such a play: emotional, creative and theatrically staged.  I can't wait!  And also next season, a revival of one of my favorite musicals of the 90's, with one of the most amazing scores ever: Titanic.  The first time around, I loved it before Rosie O'Donnell put her stamp of approval on it.  I can only imagine how the social media hounds today would have lapped up all that drama!

Epic Theatricality
Epic Star-Power
Epic Story-telling
Back to the drawing board: I've professed my love for theatre caricaturist Squigs many times before.  His drawing for Beautiful makes me smile.  I love me some Jessie Mueller, and he has captured her perfectly!

Family first: I get emotional thinking about how the Broadway community rallies around national causes.  They are unparalleled in giving.  But it also warms me, and makes me happy, when they rally around one of their own, too.  Such is the case with the cast of Motown: The Musical who gathered to produce the song and video below to support their friend and castmate, Valisia LeKae.
