BEST OF THE DECADE: The Broadway Top 40 Countdown: #30-21

Last week, we began The Broadway Top 40 Countdown of the best new Broadway songs of the last decade. If you missed it, you can check it out HERE. This week, we get up to the middle of our list with the next ten songs. The songs included this week include quite a variety: production numbers, soaring anthems, diva moments, and even a song from a play!

THE BEST OF THE DECADE:
The Broadway Top 40 Countdown:
# 30 - 21

30. "A Musical" - Something Rotten
MUSIC and LYRICS by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Karey Kirkpatrick
SUNG by Brad Oscar and Company
Our second entry from this show is a doozy of a production number! No matter what you thought of the show itself, this valentine to that thing we love, the musical, is terrific fun.

29. "The Wand Dance" - Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Part One
            MUSIC by Imogen Heap
This toe-tapper is eclipsed only by what is going on when it plays at the Lyric Theatre each night. The whole score for this play is really remarkable.

28. "Way Down Hadestown" - Hadestown
MUSIC and LYRICS by Anaïs Mitchell
            SUNG by the Company
In a score full of gems, this jazzy song evokes mood, setting and theme all at once.

27. "The Lady's Improving" - The Prom
MUSIC by Matthew Sklar   LYRICS by Chad Beguelin
            SUNG by Beth Leavel
A showstopper that knows it is one, and belted out in full diva mode by one of Broadway's great women.

26. "You Will Be Found" - Dear Evan Hansen
MUSIC and LYRICS by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul
SUNG by Ben Platt and Company
I know many of you would put this song much higher up your own list. But make no mistake, we love this rousing anthem and act one closer.

25. "Model Behaviour" - Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
MUSIC and LYRICS by David Yazbek
            SUNG by Laura Benanti
Definitely part of the Patter Songs Hall of Fame, this song is a riot, gloriously performed by the great Laura Benanti.

24. "Always Starting Over" - If/Then
MUSIC by Tom Kitt   LYRICS by Brian Yorkey
SUNG by Idina Menzel as Liz
One of the best 11 o'clock numbers of recent memory, delivered by one of the greats of the 21st century.

23. "Welcome to the Rock" - Come From Away
MUSIC and LYRICS by Irene Sankoff and David Heim
            SUNG by the Company
A great opening number that covers a lot of ground - all the characters on the ground, all the background needed to get us up to speed. And that staging!

22. "The Great Comet of 1812: - Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812
MUSIC and LYRICS by Dave Malloy
SUNG by Josh Groban and the Company
A wondrous way to end a wondrous musical. Powerful and moving. Come back soon, Josh!

21. "Zazz" - The Prom
MUSIC by Matthew Sklar   LYRICS by Chad Beguelin
SUNG by Angie Schworer and Caitlin Kinnunen
The awesome act two opener was a great tribute to Bob Fosse, with a great message, and showstopping performances.

NEXT WEEK: Numbers 20-19!
