Musical of the Month: Floyd Collins: The Cast

Last week, we introduced August's Musical of the Month, Floyd Collins an off-Broadway show that was a critical success and musical fan's dream, but had a short run in the mid-90s. You can see the introduction from last week HERE.

This week, we take a closer look at the cast of the show, many of whom are easily recognized today, but were just getting started back then.

CHRISTOPHER INNVAR as Floyd Collins
Shortly after Floyd Collins, Innvar made his Broadway debut in Victor/Victoria, and went on to play Javert in the original production of Les Miserables, as well as several other plays and musicals. Most recently, he understudied in Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune, and currently appears as the sheriff in To Kill a Mockingbird.


JASON DANIELEY as Homer Collins
These days, Jason Danieley is a household name to Broadway fans. Back when Floyd Collins debuted, he was just getting started. Not too long after, he made his Broadway debut in Candide (Theatre World Award), followed by a variety of roles in shows including The Full Monty, Curtains, Next to Normal (with his wife, the late Marin Mazzie), The Visit and, most recently, Pretty Woman.


MARTIN MORAN as "Skeets" Miller
Mr. Moran was already established on Broadway with roles in Big River and How to Succeed... (1995). Following Floyd Collins, he was seen in Titanic, Cabaret, Bells Are Ringing, Wicked and Spamalot. In 2004, he appeared off-Broadway in his acclaimed one-man play, The Tricky Part. When Broadway returns, he will be in Spring Street.

CASS MORGAN as Miss Jane
Cass Morgan, a career Broadway presence was well-established long before Floyd Collins, notably as co-star, co-writer, co-lyricist of Pump Boys and Dinettes, and such shows as The Human Comedy, and Beauty and the Beast. Post-Collins, she was in the short-lived The Capeman and Ring of Fire, and the Tony-winning productions of Mary Poppins, Memphis and The Bridges of Madison County.



THERESA McCARTHY as Nellie Collins
Ms. McCarthy went from Floyd Collins to Titanic, where she played one of the Kates.







STEPHEN LEE ANDERSON as Bee Doyle
Prior to Floyd Collins, Anderson appeared in the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Kentucky Cycle. After, he was seen in The Capeman, originated the role of Rev. Shaw Moore in Footloose, and went on to such shows The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Wicked, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, and, most recently, Bright Star.




BRIAN D'ARCY JAMES as Cliff Roney/Reporter
Another Broadway household name, James made his Broadway debut in Blood Brothers and went on to Carousel. He's had a critically acclaimed career on and off Broadway, including award nominated roles in The Wild Party, The Good Thief, Sweet Smell of Success, Port Authority, Shrek, Giant and Something Rotten! He's also originated roles in Next to Normal, Titanic and Hamilton. Most recently, he was on Broadway in The Ferryman.



DON CHASTAIN as Lee Collins
A well-respected character actor for decades, he appeared in It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman, No Strings, 42nd Street, and Dance a Little Closer before Floyd Collins, and made his final Broadway appearance in Parade. Mr. Chastain passed away in 2002.





MICHAEL MULHEREN as H.T. Carmichael
Mulheren made his Broadway debut in the ill-fated On the Waterfront before joining Floyd Collins. Since then, he's had a very active stage career, including roles in Titanic, Kiss Me, Kate (1999 - Tony nomination), The Boy From Oz, Deuce, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark and Bright Star, among others.
