TheatreScene: December 5 - 11

BROADWAY VIDEO OF THE WEEK:

I'm not sure how I missed this YouTube Channel, but I did.  And now I've found it.  The BroadwayChannel has a YouTube channel!  This version features Godspell, Follies and Chicago...plus a few little tidbits from other shows!  And there is plenty of other material to look at there, too!  Plus, they have a website all their own: www.broadwaychannel.com.

BROADWAY QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

You may have heard that Bonnie and Clyde is closing on December 30th.  It seems to be true given that groups have been notified of the closing and that Telecharge is only selling tickets through that date.  And yet the producers have not posted a closing notice.  One producer told The New York Times that they were working on some sort of campaign, hoping to gather a push in sales and thereby extend the run.

What can/should the producers do to get that sales increase and save Bonnie and Clyde?

Tell me what you think!  Send your ideas in an email to jkstheatrescene@yahoo.com!

As for last week's question:  While several of you mentioned that you were glad Jim Parsons would be back on Broadway after his triumphant debut in The Normal Heart, but you interest in the play Harvey was, shall we say, a big yawn of disinterest.

NOW IN PREVIEWS ON BROADWAY:

  • On a Clear Day You Can See Forever: Previews: November 12; Opens: December 11
  • Lysistrata Jones: Previews: November 12; Opens: December 14

BEST BROADWAY (AND OFF) NEWS OF THE WEEK:

In a word: CASTING.  Three upcoming shows named their casts, all three of which make them even more interesting than ever!

  • Carrie - The long-awaited reboot of this musical will star Marin Mazzie and Molly Ranson,  That, we knew.  But now we know there is a supporting cast full of up and coming stars, including Spring Awakening National Tour star Christy Altomare, American Idiot's Jeanna de Waal and Ben Thompson, South Pacific National Tour star Carmen Cusack, The Normal Heart's Wayne Wilcox, and American Idol's Derek Klena.

  • Evita - In addition to stars Elena Roger, Michael Cerveris and Ricky Martin, we learned that Max von Essen (Death Takes a Holiday) will play Migaldi and Rachel Potter (The Addams Family) will play the Mistress.  The ensemble is a nice mix of Broadway newcomers and veterans, including The Phantom of the Opera's George Lee Andrews.

  • Nice Work If You Can Get It - The "new" Gershwin musical will be directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall, and stars Matthew Broderick (Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Producers) and Kelli O'Hara (The Light in the Piazza, South Pacific).  That we knew.  But the supporting cast is pretty exciting, and now we know that, too.  Tony-winner  Judy Kaye (The Phantom of the Opera, Mamma Mia!), and Tony nominees Jennifer Laura Thompson (Urinetown, Wicked) and Michael McGrath (Spamalot) have joined the cast, which will also include an ensemble of Broadway's best dancers from such shows as The Pajama Game, Anything Goes, How to Succeed... and Chicago.

Spring is looking up!

Have a great week!
