Broadway Box Office
Week #1 of the 2012 - 2013 Season
May 28 - June 3; 36 Productions
This is the first official week of the new season, and the first show of 2012-2013, Harvey (13), is now in previews. Mega-hit, Death of a Salesman (2), closed June 2nd, and several shows have announced their closing shortly. One show, Godspell (35), has its producer, Ken Davenport, admitting publicly that his show's future really depends on the ticket sales following their performance on this Sunday's Tony Awards. This week, every show except Harvey and Death of a Salesman posted losses in either percentage of attendance or change in gross or (most shows) both. Even the gains posted by the play revivals were minuscule - Harvey had the biggest attendance gain at just .8% and Death's increase in receipts was the biggest at just $52K. Jesus Christ Superstar (31), The Lyons (36), and The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess (24) continue to struggle at the box office. Only two of the Best Musical nominees - Once (6) and Disney's Newsies (5) - continue to be strong. The third, Nice Work If You Can Get It (11), dipped over 14% in capacity last week. This pre-Tony slump isn't all that surprising - this being the week after Memorial Day, after all - but it also shows there is no clear blockbuster among the nominated shows.
